International Workshop organized by _Politics_ (the journal) Political Leaders and Leadership in a Changing World 10-11 December 2026, Faculty of Political Sciences and Sociology, University of Granada

Political leaders and their leadership styles influence democratic developments, political (in)stability, institutional resilience, public trust, how crises are addressed, and policy implementation. Much scholarly attention has been devoted in the last two decades to issues to do with political leadership such as the personalisation of politics, populist leadership and charisma, rhetoric and communication styles, institutional constraints, crisis management, and leader traits and characteristics (including personality). These studies have been done across a broad range of regimes from established democracies, countries facing democratic backsliding to hybrid and authoritarian regimes.

Recent developments raise questions about the role of political leaders and their leadership styles and challenge the classic understanding of their relations with followers. Such developments include, polarisation, digitalization of campaigns and communication, the emergence of new political parties, strong populist rhetoric, democratic innovations (including for intra-party democracy), leaderless movements, public apathy or cynicism in relation to political engagement, contentious politics, climate changes, security threats, and geopolitical rivalries.

This workshop welcomes papers offering new perspectives or empirical analysis of political leaders, their roles, attitudes and behaviours, as well as the nature and effects of leadership styles in contemporary politics and regimes. We welcome papers on any topics related to political leaders and leadership at national and sub-national levels. We are open to theoretical, methodological or empirical papers as long as these bring a clear contribution to the literature and move beyond the state of the art. We welcome both single-case studies and comparative analyses. We are open to qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods approaches.

Papers that are accepted for the workshop will move forward for consideration for publication in _Politics_ (current IF = 3.0, 5 years IF = 3.0) either in a special issue or as standalone paper next year. We strongly advise authors not to submit papers that are published, under review or included in a special issue for another journal at the time of the workshop. Works in progress may also be accepted, there is no need for a full / complete paper.

All costs related to the accommodation in Granada and meals during the workshop will be covered by the journal, the presenters must pay for their travel to and from the venue. There is no participation fee.

To apply, please fill this workshop application form (which requires title, abstract and author's name and affiliation) until 10 November. Submissions received after the deadline will not be considered.
